Home » The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) of Nigeria was established in 1968 and was originally called the Personnel Management Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
But sometime in 1973, PMAN changed its name to the Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (IPMN). Later on, in 1992, the institute received a charter from the Federal Government of Nigeria, becoming the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM).
This allowed CIPM to regulate the practice of human resource management in Nigeria. It is the first and only regulatory HR body in Nigeria empowered by legislation (Act 58 of 1992) to determine the standard of knowledge and skills to be obtained by persons seeking to become registered as HR professionals/practitioners.
Its main aim is to promote the practice of human resource management and improve the skills of HR professionals in the country. Over the years, CIPM has grown and developed various programs and certifications to support HR professionals.

The Institute’s examinations can only be taken by registered student members of the Institute. Each candidate must have been admitted as a student member before the examination date.
NOTE: Registered students will be required to pay annual membership subscriptions to the Institute (Whether or not exams are taken in that year).

| 2 | Intermediate I | Holders of degree (HND/Bachelor) in Management and Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Law do not need to write the CIPM Intermediate I exam. |
| 3 | Intermediate II | Holders of degree (HND/Bachelor) in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management or an M.Sc/MBA in Management and Social Sciences, M.Phil, LLM, Associate certificate (by Examination only) of other relevant and recognised Institutes |
| 4 | Professional I | To be exempted from taking the CIPM Professional Examinations I, you will need to have an M.Sc/MBA/PHD in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management. |
| 5 | Professional II | There are no exemptions for this level. All aspiring HR personnel will have to take this course and pass it before they are issued their certificates |
