About SS1 Igbo Scheme of Work
In Senior Secondary School 1 (SSS1), studying the Igbo language holds significant importance, establishing a foundation for linguistic mastery, cultural understanding, and academic success. As one of Nigeria’s primary languages, Igbo embodies a rich cultural heritage and is a key element of Igbo identity.
Beyond being a communication tool, Igbo serves as a repository for the customs, traditions, folklore, and worldviews of the Igbo people. The Lagos State unified scheme of work for the Igbo language is crafted to immerse students in both its linguistic elements and cultural subtleties. It aims to develop students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehending Igbo.
At this stage, students build on the foundational language skills gained in earlier years, focusing on expanding their vocabulary, understanding complex grammar, and mastering Igbo orthography. Through various activities, students learn to construct sentences, use idiomatic expressions, and participate in dialogues that mirror real-life situations. Reading comprehension exercises introduce them to both contemporary and traditional Igbo literature, fostering an appreciation for the language’s literary depth.
The study of Igbo in SSS1 is a pivotal educational effort that transcends basic language acquisition. By engaging with the Igbo language, students not only reconnect with their heritage but also develop essential skills for their future.
Assessment Guide
Assessment methods in Igbo are varied, encompassing written tests, oral examinations, and project work. These assessments not only evaluate students’ linguistic skills but also their understanding of cultural content and their ability to apply language in context.
Grading follows a scale from A to F, with A representing excellent performance, typically scoring around 70% or 80%, and F indicating failure, usually below 50% or 45%.
