Civic Education for junior secondary schools is a subject that teaches students about their roles and responsibilities as members of society. It covers topics on democracy, human rights, citizenship rights and duties, community involvement, and national identity/symbols. The aim is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities and participate in democratic processes.
Through civic education, students learn about the importance of respecting diversity and promoting equality and fairness in society. They also develop critical thinking skills to analyze social issues and make informed decisions as engaged members of their communities.
In junior secondary schools, assessment methods in Civic Education may vary from one institution to another. However, the common approaches include regular tests or quizzes, known as Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs), and end-of-term exams.
Students’ performance is graded on a scale ranging from A to F. An A grade reflects outstanding achievement, corresponding to scores around 70% or 80%. An F grade indicates failure, typically associated with scores below 50% or 45%.
