About JSS1 Mathematics Scheme of Work

In the first year of junior secondary school, students learn the fundamental principles of mathematics including elementary arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and progress to the exploration of shapes, sizes, and patterns.

Mathematics is everywhere in our daily lives, from managing finances to measuring cloth for sewing. By studying mathematics, students gain the practical skills needed to navigate the world effectively.

Mathematics serves as a universal language that aids us in understanding the world around us. Beyond numbers, calculations, and equations; it acts as a tool for resolving problems.

Many professions, including, engineering, medicine, and architecture,  require strong mathematical skills. By mastering mathematics in junior secondary school, students lay the groundwork for pursuing these rewarding career paths in the future.

Assessment Guide

In junior secondary schools, assessment methods in Mathematics may vary from one institution to another. However, the common approaches include regular tests or quizzes, known as Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs), and end-of-term exams.

Students’ performance is graded on a scale ranging from A to F. An A grade reflects outstanding achievement,  corresponding to scores around 70% or 80%. An F grade indicates failure, typically associated with scores below 50% or 45%.
