Nigerian History in Primary 6 is the culminating senior primary subject that provides comprehensive understanding of Nigeria’s complete political evolution, economic development, international relations, and cultural heritage. This newly revised curriculum, effective from the 2025/26 academic session, covers critical topics including detailed analysis of political systems from pre-colonial to modern democratic Nigeria, civil and military governance, democratic transitions, Nigeria’s petroleum economy and industrial growth, Nigeria’s leadership role in African independence movements and international organizations like OAU/AU and ECOWAS, Nigeria’s peacekeeping contributions, external contacts and trade including Trans-Saharan routes and early European interactions, British conquest and colonial administration, religious tolerance and cultural celebrations, traditional occupations and their modern integration, colonial economic policies and their lasting impacts.
Achievement Standards
At the end of Primary 6, students can:
- Trace and analyze Nigeria’s complete political evolution from pre-colonial societies through colonial rule to modern democratic governance, comparing strengths and weaknesses of different political systems including civil and military rule;
- Critically examine Nigeria’s economic development including the petroleum industry, industrial growth, traditional occupations, and colonial economic policies and their long-term impacts on Nigerian society;
- Identify and appreciate Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage across ethnic groups, explain the importance of religious tolerance, and evaluate contemporary challenges including environmental sustainability, technological innovation, youth development, and global citizenship responsibilities.
Assessment Guidelines
Assessments are designed to evaluate the highest levels of critical thinking, comprehensive knowledge integration across political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions, and sophisticated analytical capabilities. As the culminating primary year, Primary 6 assessments prepare students comprehensively for secondary education while reinforcing research excellence, patriotic commitment, cultural pride, global awareness, and capacity for mature civic engagement as informed, responsible, and globally-minded Nigerian citizens ready to contribute to national development and international cooperation.
